The WASH Infrastructure Upgradation Project aims to improve access to safe drinking water, hygienic sanitation, and essential hygiene facilities across five Government schools located within a 1–2.5 km radius of Narayana healthcare facilities in Delhi and Gurgaon.
The initiative addresses critical gaps in school-level Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, including poorly maintained toilet blocks, inadequate handwashing facilities, unsafe sanitation structures, and limited access to clean drinking water. These challenges can increase health risks, affect student well-being, and contribute to absenteeism and reduced participation in school activities, particularly among adolescent girls.
With approximately 5,294 students expected to benefit, the project aims to create safe, functional, and dignified school environments that support health, hygiene, and uninterrupted learning.
Key Objectives
Improve access to safe and clean drinking water in Government schools.
Upgrade and strengthen existing sanitation infrastructure.
Improve access to functional and hygienic toilet facilities.
Strengthen handwashing and personal hygiene infrastructure.
Promote better hygiene practices among students and school communities.
Address WASH-related challenges affecting student health, attendance, and participation.
Create safer and more dignified school environments, particularly for adolescent girls.
Key Intervention Areas
1. Safe Drinking Water: Improvement of drinking water facilities to ensure students have access to safe and reliable water within the school premises.
2. Sanitation Infrastructure: Upgradation and improvement of toilet facilities to create cleaner, safer, and more functional sanitation environments for students.
3. Handwashing & Hygiene Facilities: Strengthening handwashing infrastructure and supporting improved hygiene practices among students.
4. Behaviour & Hygiene Awareness: Alongside infrastructure improvements, the project adopts a behaviour-support approach to encourage students to follow appropriate hygiene practices and make effective use of improved WASH facilities.
5. Inclusive School Environment: The project places particular importance on creating safe and dignified facilities for young children and adolescent girls, supporting their health, comfort, attendance, and continued participation in education.
Expected Impact
The initiative seeks to benefit approximately 5,294 students by creating healthier and more functional school environments. Improved WASH infrastructure, combined with greater awareness of hygiene practices, is expected to reduce health risks, promote student well-being, and support more consistent attendance and participation in school.
Implementation Approach
The project is being implemented through a bipartite partnership between Narayana Hrudayalaya Limited and CCSE (Centre for CSR and Sustainability Excellence). The integrated approach combines infrastructure upgradation with hygiene and behaviour support to strengthen WASH conditions across five Government schools in Delhi and Gurgaon.
